Konark Sun Temple

The temple was conceived as Surya's chariot: twelve pairs of intricately carved wheels along the plinth, seven horses straining at the front. The main tower collapsed centuries ago, but the surviving jagamohana and the carving across every surface make it the finest single monument in eastern India.

The wheels double as sundials and still tell the time. Late afternoon light is best on the east-facing carvings.
