The scale takes a moment to register: walls up to 36 metres high, seven gates, and courtyards of carved sandstone that look like woodwork. The museum inside covers palanquins, arms, miniatures and the Phool Mahal, and the ramparts give the view that put Jodhpur on posters.
The audio guide included with the ticket is excellent — allow at least two and a half hours if you use it properly.
Lifts are available for anyone who cannot manage the ramps. The Flying Fox zip-line circuit over the fort walls is booked separately and is genuinely good.
