Amber (pronounced Amer) was the Kachwaha capital before Jaipur was built. The four courtyards climb the hillside: the public audience hall, then Sheesh Mahal with its convex mirror mosaic, then the zenana quarters, connected by ramps and tunnels.
Allow two and a half hours to see it properly, and go early — by 11am the coach tours arrive and the Sheesh Mahal becomes a queue.
