It deserves the reputation. The scale only registers when you walk the length of the water channel and realise the building is still growing in front of you, and the pietra dura inlay — semi-precious stone set flush into marble — only registers when you are close enough to touch it.

Go at sunrise. The marble shifts from grey to pink to white in about forty minutes, and the crowd at 6am is a fraction of the crowd at 10am.
